According to the latest report from Statcounter, smartphones have officially become the primary gateway to the internet worldwide. As of the second quarter of 2025, a staggering 64.13% of all global web traffic comes from mobile devices, leaving traditional desktops and laptops in the dust. This marks a dramatic shift from just a decade ago, when smartphones accounted for only 31.16% of web traffic—a figure that has more than doubled in ten years.

The trend is especially noticeable even among tech-focused audiences. Websites dedicated to PC hardware and analysis are seeing a rapid increase in visitors using Android and iOS devices, outpacing those on Windows, Linux, or Mac. The convenience, affordability, and familiarity of smartphones—especially for younger generations—are key drivers behind this transformation.

Asia leads the mobile revolution

The dominance of smartphones in web traffic is not evenly distributed across the globe. Asia stands out as the clear leader, with 71.3% of its web traffic coming from mobile devices, well above the global average. Countries like China, India, South Korea, and Indonesia are at the forefront, thanks to widespread access to affordable smartphones and fast 5G networks. In contrast, the share of mobile web traffic in the Americas and Europe hovers around 50%, reflecting a more balanced use of PCs and smartphones.

The COVID-19 pandemic briefly slowed the rise of mobile web usage, as more people turned to computers for remote work and study. However, since then, smartphone usage has steadily climbed each quarter. For many, especially the youth, smartphones have become the only device they need—replacing computers for everything from streaming movies and music to social networking and instant messaging. Today, PCs are largely reserved for work, study, or gaming.

Android dominates the mobile web

When it comes to operating systems, Android is the undisputed leader, powering 72.72% of smartphones responsible for web traffic, while iOS holds a 26.92% share. The accessibility of Android devices, combined with the rapid rollout of 5G technology in Asia, has fueled this dominance.

The shift to mobile-first internet access is reshaping how businesses, content creators, and advertisers reach their audiences. As smartphones continue to outpace traditional computers, companies must adapt their strategies to meet users where they are—on their mobile devices.

The message is clear: the future of the web is mobile, and the numbers are only going up.
