In a strategic move highlighting the growing importance of global digital infrastructure, Google has announced the construction of “Sol,” a new transatlantic submarine cable. This new data highway will connect the United States (Florida), Bermuda, the Azores, and Spain (Santander), creating a vital corridor for information flow and strengthening connectivity for cloud services and artificial intelligence. The project not only represents a technological advancement but also promises significant economic and strategic impact on all communities where it will land.
The name “Sol” is a nod to the warm climates of its landing points and symbolizes the energy and growth this infrastructure is expected to drive. Once operational, expected by 2027, Sol will become the only active fiber-optic cable directly connecting Florida to Europe — a route not established since 1999 — opening a new high-capacity communication path across the Atlantic.
A robust network for the AI era
Sol’s main goal is to strengthen Google’s global network, which already includes 42 Cloud regions worldwide. In an era where demand for cloud computing services — especially artificial intelligence — is growing exponentially, the need for resilient, low-latency network infrastructure is more critical than ever. AI requires the movement of massive amounts of data to train and operate models efficiently, and cables like Sol are the arteries that make this possible.
This project cannot be understood in isolation. It works in tandem with “Nuvem” (Portuguese for “cloud”), another Google cable announced earlier, connecting Portugal, Bermuda, and the United States. Together, Sol and Nuvem will create a dual-route system with terrestrial interconnection points in the Iberian Peninsula and the U.S., as well as in the Bermuda and Azores archipelagos. This dual-cable architecture provides unprecedented resilience; if one cable suffers a cut or disruption, traffic can be rerouted through the other, ensuring service continuity.
To carry out the landings, Google has partnered with specialized companies. In Palm Coast, Florida, it will work with DC BLOX to build the cable landing station (CLS) and a new connectivity center. In Santander, Spain, the partner will be Telxius, bringing its expertise and infrastructure to connect the cable to the European network and further integrate the Google Cloud region in Madrid.
Strategic and economic impact on both sides of the Atlantic
The arrival of a cable of this magnitude acts as a catalyst for local development. In the U.S., the project positions Florida as a new and crucial international connectivity hub. The new terrestrial route linking Palm Coast to the Google Cloud region in South Carolina will strengthen the digital infrastructure of the southeastern U.S., attracting investment and fostering technological innovation.
For Spain, particularly Santander, the landing of Sol represents a significant boost. Similarly, the Azores solidify their position as a highly valuable geostrategic point in transatlantic communications. As a landing point for both Nuvem and now Sol, the Portuguese archipelago becomes a fundamental connectivity node — a true “digital hub” in the middle of the Atlantic.
