Compass Mining, a provider of Bitcoin mining infrastructure, has announced a new partnership that transforms cryptocurrency mining into a force for social good. Through its collaboration with Synota’s “Impact Mining” initiative, the company is directing some of its computing power to generate funds that reduce electricity costs for communities in Nigeria.

Bitcoin mining—the process of using powerful computers to validate transactions on the Bitcoin network—typically consumes significant electricity. This new initiative turns that relationship on its head by using the revenue from mining to make electricity more affordable for those who need it most.

“This is hashrate with heart,” said Paul Gosker, CEO of Compass Mining. “We’re proud to show our customers and the broader industry how Bitcoin mining can improve lives, not just balance sheets.”

Real-world impact

The initial phase of this partnership is already making a difference in two locations in Nigeria:

  • Oloibiri Hospital: Compass Mining’s contribution helps cover monthly power bills, allowing the facility to redirect resources to patient care. The hospital serves over 3,600 patients annually and has delivered more than 34,000 babies since 2010.
  • Ozuzu Village: In this rural community connected to a solar mini-grid since 2021, 150 homes, businesses, and a school now benefit from a 20% reduction in power costs. This translates to more lighting, increased technology use, and greater economic opportunity.

Through a specialized mining pool configuration provided by Synota and managed on behalf of Renewvia Solar Africa (an operator of clean energy mini-grids in Africa), Compass Mining directs a portion of its computing power—known as “hashrate”—to generate revenue specifically for offsetting electricity costs.

“Bitcoin mining has always been a driver of energy innovation,” explained CJ Burnett, Chief Revenue Officer at Compass Mining. “Now it’s a driver of energy opportunity. A small portion of global hashrate is delivering outsized impact for real people.”

A new model for the industry

Compass Mining views this initiative as proof that cryptocurrency mining can be both profitable and purposeful. The company suggests that whether through direct machine allocation or partial hashrate donations, the cryptocurrency mining industry has an opportunity to contribute to social good.

“They’ve shown that any miner, anywhere in the world, can take part in Impact Mining simply by redirecting a portion of their hashrate through a shared pool configuration,” said Austin Mitchell, CEO and Co-founder of Synota. “It’s a small step that can make a big difference.”

Looking ahead, Synota plans to expand the Impact Mining initiative, and Compass Mining intends to continue the partnership. The companies also note that donating computing power may offer tax advantages for miners.

This initiative represents a novel approach to addressing criticisms about cryptocurrency mining’s environmental impact by demonstrating how the industry can directly contribute to energy access, healthcare, and education in underserved communities.
