France is taking a big step into the digital future by introducing digital identity cards for iPhones, with plans to roll them out nationwide by this summer. This move positions France as a leader in digital ID adoption, far ahead of countries like the United States, where progress has been much slower.
Identity cards are already a staple in France, used by around 25 million people as an alternative to passports or driver’s licenses. These cards serve as a primary form of government-issued identification for many citizens. Now, the French government is preparing to make these IDs available in a digital format through an app called France Identité.
The app will allow users to store their ID cards on their smartphones, making it easier to access identification on the go. While Apple Wallet supports digital IDs in some regions, it’s unclear if the France Identité system will integrate with Apple Wallet or operate as a standalone app.
The French government aims to launch the digital ID system in time for summer vacations, a period when many citizens travel and need quick access to identification. Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau explained that the rollout will begin as an experimental phase, with a full-scale launch planned for later in the year.
This isn’t France’s first foray into digital identification. In 2024, the country introduced digital versions of driver’s licenses, making the transition to digital ID cards a logical next step.
Leading the way in digital ID
France’s progress in digital ID adoption stands in stark contrast to the United States, where efforts remain fragmented. While France is preparing for a nationwide rollout, only a handful of U.S. states currently support digital IDs in platforms like Apple Wallet. Illinois became the latest state to join this list in January, bringing the total to just 11 states.
Some U.S. states, such as Florida, have opted for proprietary digital ID systems that don’t integrate with Apple Wallet, further complicating the adoption process. Meanwhile, other states have announced plans to introduce digital IDs but have yet to follow through.
France’s initiative is part of a larger trend in Europe, where the European Union is working on a continent-wide digital ID framework. The EU Digital Identity project aims to create a unified digital wallet for national ID cards that would be recognized across all member states. However, this ambitious plan is still in its early stages, with only small-scale trials underway.
While both the U.S. and the EU are moving toward digital IDs, France’s swift action sets it apart as a leader in this space. By embracing digital identity cards, France is not only simplifying life for its citizens but also paving the way for a more connected and efficient future.
